Lewis Strauss, finančník z Wall Street, který nestudoval vysokou školu, aby mohl prodávat boty, se během studené války stal jedním z nejdůležitějších amerických poradců pro atomovou energii. Proslavil se také svou rolí v dramatickém pádu hlavního vývojáře A-bomby, fyzika J. Roberta Oppenheimera.
Strauss zaplatil cenu za Oppenheimera na černé listině. Když Eisenhower jmenoval Strausse ministrem obchodu USA, Senát jeho nominaci odmítl po hořkém potvrzovacím slyšení, ve kterém hrálo zásadní roli jeho zacházení s Oppenheimerem. Strauss byl teprve osmým kandidátem na kabinet v historii USA – a jediným mezi lety 1925 a 1989 –, kterému se nepodařilo získat toto potvrzení. Po porážce se Strauss až do své smrti v roce 1974 zaměřil na filantropické podniky.
