LOS ALAMOS, NM – FEBRUARY 27, 2016: Bronze sculptures of Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer and General Leslie Groves stand in a park in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The small city is home to the Los Alamos National Laboratory, established in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project, the nation’s top secret program to develop and build the atomic bomb. Oppenheimer and Groves played principal roles in the development of the two atom bombs which were dropped on Japan. Oppenheimer was the director of the Laboratory while the bombs were being designed and built. Groves was the Commanding General of the Manhattan Engineer District.
